Accreditation is Important in Online RN to BSN Programs

Prospective Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students should ensure that they apply only to accredited online RN to BSN programs at accredited nursing schools. According to the U.S. Department of Education Office of Postsecondary Education, “The goal of accreditation is to ensure that education provided by institutions of higher education meets acceptable levels of quality.”

A summary of accreditation

The U.S. Department of Education identifies accrediting agencies as “private educational associations of regional or national scope that develop evaluation criteria and conduct peer evaluations.” These agencies determine whether an institution or program meets those criteria. Institutions request an agency’s evaluation, and those who meet the criteria are “accredited” by that agency. Both universities and industry professionals view accreditation as an assurance of quality.

Earning ACEN accreditation

The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) is one of two national accreditation agencies that evaluates nursing education programs. As an accrediting agency, ACEN ensures the quality and integrity of schools that offer both postsecondary and higher degrees in nursing. The accreditation process includes a review of faculty qualification, curriculum, ability and resources to deliver the program, among other areas. Only after passing ACEN’s rigorous review process does a school become earn accreditation.

Beyond a sign of distinction

Arkansas State University is an example of a Higher Learning Commission-accredited school that offers an ACEN-accredited online RN to BSN program. The school-wide accreditation affirms that A-State as a whole meets quality standards and pursues continuous improvement. The ACEN accreditation affirms the value and standards that are specific to nursing programs.

Prospective students should choose an accredited online RN to BSN program to ensure that they receive the proper foundation to practice as a nurse. For those interested in an advanced degree in the future, a BSN from an accredited program is an essential first step.
