Finding sociology scholarships that fit a student’s strengths and needs may seem like a time-consuming, stressful task for prospective sociology majors, but it does not have to be. Here is a list of scholarships for students who want to earn a BA in sociology.
Presbyterian Church USA Student Opportunity Scholarship
Although this scholarship is strictly for Presbyterians, the church does offer other scholarships open to those of any religion. Each year, the number of awards given varies, as does the amount of the scholarship. A minimum of 2.5 GPA is a requirement, and students must show financial need. Minority students are given preference.
Eligible Students: Presbyterian Church members who are majoring in social sciences, social services, religion or education.
Amount: Up to $1,500.
Lou Hochberg Award
Awarded by the Orgone Biophysical Research Lab, this sociology scholarship is given to students for their essays or research. They encourage students to submit research on any topic covered in William Reich’s scientific contributions and focus on one sociological issue. Students can submit up to 50 pages twice per year (including re-submissions).
Eligible Students: Must be studying at a university or college level.
Amount: $500.
ALBA George Watt Memorial Essay Scholarship
Students seeking a BA in sociology can apply for this award granted by The Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives. Applicants must write an essay between 3,500 and 7,500 words on a social aspect of the Spanish Civil War or fascism in the 1920s. Grading is based on originality, strength of research, and effectiveness of the essay.
Eligible Students: Social science or sociology majors.
Amount: $500.
Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research
To apply for this scholarship, you do not need to be a member of Sigma Xi (a national sociology non-profit organization). This award does not fund a student’s tuition; rather, it goes toward research and other expenses like lab equipment and textbooks. Applicants must submit their plan for the prize money in their application.
Eligible Students: Those taking sociology classes or sociology majors.
Amount: Up to $5,000.
Islamic Scholarship Fund
Awards are available for undergraduate and graduate students. Applicants must submit various types of documentation, including their application form, resume, video introduction, essay questions, college transcripts, letters of recommendation, and sample work.
Eligible Student: Muslim students of humanities, social sciences, liberal arts or law.
Amount: Between $1,000 and $10,000.
Although students may sometimes have to work diligently to find opportunities, there are many sociology scholarships available. Requirements are based on elements such as academic merit, answers to essay questions or religious affiliations. Further, some scholarships are very specific about how students use the prize money, which is a consideration applicants should keep in mind.
