Blended Learning for Personalized Education

Blended learning is a model of education in which students divide their learning time between traditional classroom models and the use of technology in the classroom. This type of learning is becoming widely popular and offers a variety of benefits to school administrators, educators and students.

Teachers pursuing an online Master of Science in Education in Educational Leadership degree will become familiar with the four models of blended learning for personalized education. Teachers will also learn how adopting a blended learning model may allow for flexibility in scheduling and a student-centered learning experience as well as how the model integrates technology with one-on-one teaching.

Flexibility in Scheduling

With blended learning, students and teachers have flexible schedules. Some days, a student may work primarily independently and online, while other days, he or she may meet with a teacher for one-on-one meetings in academic areas where the student is struggling. As students navigate the online curriculum, teachers can track progress, shift lesson plans or offer additional instruction based on how a student is doing. And because computers are now doing the work of grading quizzes and assessing progress, teachers are free to guide students in a more holistic and productive manner.

Student-Centered Approach

Because blended learning offers students the opportunity to utilize teacher instruction as well as online learning, students can progress through material at their own pace. This shift away from the “one size fits all” educational model situates students at the center of their own education. Students who learn to navigate curriculum in a variety of ways can develop responsibility and time management skills. When a student is struggling in a particular area, he or she can slow down in order to fully develop understanding of the material.

Integration of Technology and One-on-One Teaching

In today’s global economy, technology is incredibly important; therefore, exposing a student to technology in the classroom is an important and relevant investment in his or her future career. However, it is important to note that blended learning does not rely entirely on online learning. The model values facetime — teachers are as important as technology, so the model strives to integrate teachers and technology in the same learning space.

Blended learning is an exciting new development within our educational system, being explored by school districts across the country. Research shows that blended learning environments can contribute to a high level of academic achievements among students. As a candidate pursuing an online master’s degree in education, you will learn more about the models of blended learning and how these models can contribute to productive learning environments.
