The tightly integrated, application-based curriculum in this online master’s program covers instructional strategies and techniques associated with supporting reading, writing, listening and speaking development. Students will learn about methods, materials and technology resources to inform their second-language lesson design.

This program gives students the opportunity to broaden their knowledge of curriculum theory and current practices based on National Board Certification standards. Students in this program will benefit from the incorporation of technology that aligns with national expectations for the 21st-century educator.

Within this master's degree, students will learn to:

  • Understand and apply different theories behind the ways individuals learn
  • Help prepare teachers for National Board certification
  • Apply theories to teach language proficiency for a second language
  • Utilize tools to instruct language learning for reading, speaking, listening and writing a second language
  • Understand the role of culture in teaching second-language proficiency

A-State Online offers a streamlined admission process for both new students and transfers. Students who are interested in the MSE in Educational Theory and Practice – ESL online program must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution and a valid teaching certificate. Make sure to review full admission requirements below.

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with at least 2.75 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale
  • Valid, active teaching certificate
  • Note: If you have a 2.75-2.99 GPA, you must make a grade of B or better during the first 12 hours of graduate work at Arkansas State University.
  • Complete online application
  • Pay the nonrefundable $30 fee
  • Send official transcript(s) from the college/university attended. Official transcripts are sealed transcripts sent from the sending institution.

Additional Information

Unless otherwise noted, Arkansas State University has not confirmed if a program has met requirements for an out-of-state licensure. Please refer to the Program Approval Map to determine which programs are eligible to be offered in states and to find relevant state agency contact information. Eligibility to offer in a state does not guarantee the program will meet state licensure/certification requirements.

Please contact your state’s Professional License Department/Board to ensure that your chosen distance education program meets your state’s requirements in which you intend to practice.

  • Students who fall below the minimum admission requirements (GPA) may send a written letter of appeal, GRE or GMAT scores (may be unofficial), and additional supporting information to [email protected].
  • The appeal request will be forwarded to the department chair for conditional admission review.

Applicants with prior “F” or “D” grades at the graduate level in any graduate program will not be admitted to the A-State MPA program. In addition, students who earn failing (“F) grades in the A-State MPA program are ineligible for readmission to the program. The only exception is with the Capstone.

Up to 9 graduate hours from A-State or other higher education institutions may be credited toward a program. No course can be older than six years by graduation time. Transfer credit will be evaluated by the Director of the Program. To request prior credit be evaluated, please complete the Graduate Transfer Credit Evaluation Form.

EESL 6633: Methods and Materials for Teaching Second Language

Duration: 7 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

This course explores instructional strategies and techniques associated with supporting reading, writing, listening, and speaking development for ELLs. The focus of this course will be methods, materials, and technology resources that teachers can utilize to inform their second-language lesson design.

EESL 6643: Second Language Assessment

Duration: 7 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

Study of second language assessment techniques and procedures for utilizing both formative and summative assessments in order to evaluate a second language learner’s listening, speaking, reading and writing. Construction and critiques of instruments for assessing proficiencies are examined.

EESL 6653: Second Language Acquisition

Duration: 7 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

This course introduces students to the foundational principles of language acquisition. Students will examine theories and research in the field of second language acquisition as it applies to classroom instruction.

EESL 6663: Teaching People from Other Cultures

Duration: 7 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

This course investigates sociolinguistics and the role of culture in the educational context as related to teaching English as a second language. Students will explore multilingualism, multiculturalism, and cross-cultural communication as it impacts language teaching and students' language learning.

ELAD 6003: School and Community Relations

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

Focuses on concepts, programs, and procedures for establishing and maintaining positive relations between the school, its constituents, and related agencies.

ELAD 6073: School Law

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

Focuses on constitutional and statutory provisions and court decisions regarding the legal aspects of education.

EESL 6673: Capstone/ Internship

Duration: 7 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

This capstone course provides students with practical hands-on clinical experience in a school setting. The course will focus on authentic problems and activities that require students to demonstrate skills in teaching ELL students.

ELFN 6773: Introduction to Statistics and Research

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

An introductory course in methods and techniques of research, and the statistical treatment and interpretation of research data.

TE 6263: Teachers as Professionals: Working toward National Teaching Standards

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

Focuses on applying the five core propositions of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in an examination of teaching practices.

ELCI 6533: Theories of Instruction

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

Focuses on learning theories and various models of teaching.
