A-State Online offers a streamlined admission process for both new students and transfers. Students who are interested in the B.S.B.A. – Hospitality Management online program should review and follow the requirements for admission below.

There are several paths to admittance at A-State:

  • If you have 13 or more transferrable college credit hours, you would be admitted if you have a cumulative college GPA of at least 2.0 on previous college coursework
  • If you have 0-12 transferrable college credit hours and have been out of high school for five years or more, you would be admitted if you:

    • Have a high school diploma or state-approved equivalent
    • Have completed 12 or fewer earned college hours
    • Have never enrolled as a student at A-State

    Note: If you’re admitted as non-traditional first-time freshman, you may be required to successfully complete a predesignated curriculum of 12 hours (Certificate or Non-Degree). Upon successful completion, you will be transitioned to a degree seeking program.

  • If you have 0-12 transferrable college credit hours and have been in high school within the last 5 years, you would be admitted if you have one of the following:
    • 3.0 cumulative high school grad point average (or GED test score equivalent), OR
    • 19 minimum ACT super score or minimum 990 combined SAT super score, OR
    • Class rank in the top 20% of your graduating class

Submitting your application takes three easy steps: filling out the application, submitting your documents and paying the application fee.

  1. When completing the online application, select 100% online student and then complete all the steps on the online application.
  2. Pay $30.00 non-refundable application fee.
  3. Submit all official college transcripts.
  4. Submit official high school transcripts (if applicable).
  5. Submit official ACT/ SAT test scores (if applicable).

Note: If you have 0-12 transferrable college hours, test scores will still need to be submitted for reporting purposes to the Arkansas Department of Higher Education (ADHE); however, they are not needed for an admission decision. Accuplacer test scores are an acceptable alternative to ACT/SAT scores.

To earn your Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an Area of Study in Hospitality Management, you need to complete 120 credit hours of coursework. The program includes 38 credit hours of general education courses, 63 credit hours of major courses, 12 credit hours of Hospitality Management courses and 7 credit hours of electives. Students can finish faster by transferring previously earned credit hours. Transfer credit hours will be evaluated during the admission process.

ACCT 2033: Introduction to Financial Accounting

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

Introduction to accounting and the accounting cycle includes focus on basic accounting and reporting for merchandising and service-oriented business organizations. Primary emphasis is on accounting principles applicable to measuring assets, liabilities, owners' equity and income. Special measurement problems for partnerships and corporations.

ACCT 2133: Introduction to Managerial Accounting

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

This course covers basic accounting and reporting for manufacturing companies. The course is also devoted to managerial uses of accounting data for the decision-making function and to special accounting reports.

BCOM 2563: Business Communication

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

Theories and principles of written, interpersonal and oral communication.

FIN 3713: Business Finance

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

Legal forms of American business organization, policies, methods and institutions involved in financing business are examined. The principles of financial management will be studied with emphasis on the corporation, including cash flows, securities, financial structures, expansion and acquisitions.

ISBA 1503: Microcomputer Applications

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

Students will learn basic computer skills that can be used immediately, throughout college and beyond. Emphasis is on learning basic office applications in word processing, spreadsheets, databases and presentation graphics.

ISBA 3013: Management Information Systems

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

Provides understanding of information needs of management, information technology used by various business subsystems, and how technology can be utilized for competitive advantage. Prerequisite: ISBA 1503 or CS 1013.

ISBA 3553: Foundation of Business Analytics

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

Contemporary processes, methods, techniques, tools and datasets that organizations use to implement knowledge discovery projects; focus on development of critical thinking through use of in-depth assignments that utilize project management fundamentals. Prerequisites, ISBA 1503, ACCT 2033, ACCT 2133, and STAT 3233.

LAW 2023: Legal Environment of Business

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

Introduction to the fundamental elements of the Anglo American legal system and its common law origins. The scope of the course will include the application and operation of the legal system in the remedy of business disputes, the development and operation of the court system, and the regulation of American business and industry by the United States government.

MGMT 2003: Entrepreneurial Discovery and Innovation

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

Introduction to concepts and practices related to the discovery and creation of entrepreneurial activities by individuals and organizations.

MGMT 3123: Principles of Management

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

This course is an overview of foundational management principles, including internal and external assessment and planning, organization structure and design, leadership and motivation, and decision and control processes.

MGMT 4813: Strategic Management

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

Designed to give students the opportunity to study administrative processes under conditions of uncertainty including an integrating analysis applied to all fields of business. Special emphasis is given to policy determination at the overall management level.

MKTG 3013: Marketing

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

This course examines business activities performed which direct the flow of goods and services from producer to consumer or user in order to satisfy customers and accomplish company objectives. Special course fees may apply.

STAT 3233: Applied Statistics I

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

This course is for students in a variety of disciplines including the sciences, allied health fields, and education. Focus is on descriptive statistics for quantitative and qualitative data, normal distributions, correlation, linear regression, sample surveys, randomized comparative experiments, sampling distributions, estimation and hypothesis testing for means and proportions.

ACCT 4153: Fraud Examination

A study of how and why occupational fraud is committed, how fraudulent conduct can be deterred, and how allegations of fraud should be investigated and resolved. Prerequisites, ACCT 2133, MATH 2143, STAT 3233, and ISBA 1503.

FIN 3763: Financial Institutions and Markets

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

An in depth study of financial institutions such as banks, savings and loans, insurance companies and financial markets. Primary emphasis will be on depository institutions. Prerequisites, ECON 2313 and FIN 3713.

FIN 3813: International Financial Management and Banking

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

Study of financial concepts and issues in banking as they relate to business decisions in a global economy. Prerequisite, FIN 3713.

ECON 3313: Microeconomics Analysis

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

Designed to develop an analytical framework for the study of the determination of relative prices and the allocation of resources in a market economy. The course will cover consumer choice and demand, resource utilization and the theory of the firm, competitive market equilibrium and resource allocation, and noncompetitive market structures.

ECON 3353: Macroeconomic Analysis

Explains economic theories as they relate to national policy making. Emphasis on causes of inflation and unemployment. Prerequisites, ECON 2313 and 2323.

MGMT 3143: Human Resource Management

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

Functions and problems involved in personnel management with emphasis placed upon recruitment, selection, management development, utilization of and accommodation to human resources by organizations. Prerequisite, MGMT 3153

MKTG 4043: Consumer Behavior

Evaluation of the extensive body of research evidence pertaining to the consumer, and an assessment of the marketing implications of the various processes and facets of consumer motivation. Special course fees may apply. Prerequisite, MKTG 3013.

ECON 4333: Government Regulations of Business

Survey of theoretical treatments of oligopoly, natural monopoly, and market failures, review of antitrust statutes applicable to price fixing, monopoly, mergers, vertical restraints, and price discrimination, social welfare trade-offs associated with public regulation of electric, natural gas, cable TV, and telecommunications firms. Prerequisite, ECON 2313, 2323.

MGMT 3613: Leadership

HEMT 2013: The Hospitality Industry

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

An overview of the various segments in the hospitality industry and their relationship to travel and tourism.

HEMT 3013: Lodging Operations Management

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

This course examines the inter-relationships between the various lodging departments and the management practices utilized to successfully operate lodging properties.

HEMT 3123: Meeting and Event Management

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

This course examines the elements of the meeting and event planning process from the inception of an idea through development, planning, and implementation.

HEMT 3143: Hospitality Sales and Marketing

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

This course examines the general stages of the personal selling process as they apply to the hospitality industry. In addition, the supporting roles of sales technologies and other components of the marketing mix are discussed.

You must also complete 7 credit hours of electives to satisfy the 120 credit hours required for this program. Courses may be chosen with the assistance of an advisor and per your degree plan. Electives can come from any courses offered as long as prerequisites are met.

Students must take the following courses.

First-year course - Students must take the following Making Connections online course. If you transfer in more than 12 credit hours, you will not be required to take the Making Connections course. You may replace that 3-hour course with a 3-hour elective course.

UC 1013: Making Connections

Required course for all first semester freshmen. Course content is centered around the skills and knowledge needed to be a successful ASU student, including academic performance, problem solving, critical thinking, self-management and group building skills, university policies and other relevant issues.

Departmental Option Course Requirement:

This 3-hour course for the degree plan is chosen by the department, not the individual student.

COMS 1203: Oral Communication

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

This course focuses on the theory and practice of communication in interpersonal, small groups and public speaking contexts, emphasizing proficiency in message organization, delivery, and critical thinking.

Communication Requirement:

Students must complete 6 credit hours of the following courses.

ENG 1003: Composition I

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

Study and practice of fundamentals of written communication, including principles of grammar, punctuation, spelling, organization, and careful analytical reading. Prerequisite, with grade of C or better, for ENG 1013.

ENG 1013: Composition II

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

Continues the practice of ENG 1003 to develop further the skills learned in that course. Based on reading and discussion of various types of writing, the students’ essays will provide practice in different kinds of rhetorical development, including research and documentation.

Mathematics Requirement:

Students must complete 3 credit hours of the following course.

MATH 2143: Business Calculus

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

This course looks at exponential functions, mathematics of finance, systems of linear equations, linear inequalities and linear programming, limits, derivatives, and integrals, business calculus applications including marginal analysis, extrema and concavity of functions of one and several variables.

Arts and Humanities Requirement:

Students must complete 6 credit hours of Arts and Humanities courses. Three hours must be one of the following courses:

MUS 2503: Fine Arts – Music

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

An introduction to music for the listener who has had no formal musical training or experience. A study of musical styles and composers and their cultural and historical contexts.

THEA 2503: Fine Arts – Theatre

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

Introduction to aesthetic and critical appreciation of the art of theatre through lecture, live and video performance, and discussion.

ART 2503: Fine Arts Visual

Duration: Varies  |  Credit Hours: 3

Course Description: Introduction to major artists, media, styles and works of art within their cultural and historical contexts for the non-art major.

Three hours must be one of the following courses:

ENG 2003: Introduction to World Literature I

Introduction to the analysis and interpretation of literary works from several historical periods ranging from early civilizations through the Renaissance.

PHIL 1103: Introduction to Philosophy

Students must complete 9 credit hours of Social Sciences courses. Three hours must be one of the following courses:

United States history. Social, economic, and political developments from Columbus to the end of Reconstruction.

POSC 2103: Introduction to US Government

The constitution, government, and politics of the United States.

ECON 2313: Principles of Macroeconomics

This course examines national income accounting, inflation and unemployment, competing theories of national income, fiscal policy, the Federal Reserve System and monetary policy, and international trade.

ECON 2323: Principles of Microeconomics

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

Principles of resource allocation, supply and demand, consumer behavior, costs of production, the competitive model, oligopoly, and factor markets are examined.

Life Science Requirement:

Students must complete 4 credit hours of Life Science courses, including one course and one lab.

BIO 1003: Biological Science

Duration: 7 weeks  |  Credit Hours: 3

The major characteristics and processes of life emphasizing the human organism. Promotes understanding of diversity and unity among living organisms with focus on ecological interactions and responsibilities of people within their social and natural environment. Lecture three hours per week. Special course fees may apply. Must be taken with BIO 1001.

BIO 1001: Biological Science Lab
