Insight Into Our Dyslexia Certificate
Expand your teaching repertoire in as few as eight months with this accelerated online Dyslexia Certificate program. Continue working while you complete coursework and gain hands-on experience performing clinical assessment and intervention in reading and related areas with young students and adolescents in secondary grades.



Aligned with the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) standards and the International Literacy Association (ILA), the curriculum covers the structure of language, the interaction between language and literacy, diagnostic principles and practices necessary for evaluating reading skills, and multisensory approaches used to help struggling readers. This program also gives you a working understanding of the legal mandates that protect the educational and civil rights of students receiving dyslexia services in public school environments.

Admissions
Requirements for the Online Dyslexia Certificate
A-State Online offers a streamlined admission process so you can get started quickly and easily. While students must have a bachelor's degree and a valid teaching certificate to be admitted to our Dyslexia Certificate online program, teaching experience is not required. Students should check for specific requirements in their state. See full admission requirements below.
- Complete online application and submit a non-refundable $30 fee
- Official transcript(s) sent from the registrar of the college/university attended. Official transcripts are sealed transcripts sent from the granting institution
- Have a Baccalaureate degree with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least a 3.0 on a 4.00 scale from an accredited institution
- Hold a valid teaching license
- Commitment from a literacy coach or reading specialist, or other acceptable mentor who will function as your mentor during the program. The mentor must have reading/ language arts experience. "View acceptable mentors (.PDF)"

Courses
The Degree Plan for Our Online Graduate Certificate Program
Students in the Dyslexia Certificate online program are required to complete 15 credit hours of coursework, consisting of four courses and a practicum.
Students in this program must complete the following courses (15 credit hours).
RDNG 6563: Principles of Literacy Cognition
Duration: 7 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
This course is an examination of current research on literacy cognition, reading disorders, and research-based methodologies for reading instruction, with implications for instruction.
RDNG 6533: Literacy for Diverse Learners
Duration: 7 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
This course examines literacy issues in the context of multicultural education and culturally responsive pedagogy with a focus on the differentiation of literacy needs among various student cultures and special needs students. Presentation and rehearsal of explicit literacy instruction to enhance comprehension.
RDNG 6333: Reading Practicum I: Diagnosis and Intervention
Duration: 7 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
Course features clinical experiences in assessment and intervention in reading and related areas.
RDNG 6513: Emergent Literacy Birth
Duration: 7 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
Focuses on the development of literacy skills, birth through primary grades, including the process of exposure to words, print, and the opportunity to write as a part of the literacy process. This course maintains alignment with state and national standards.
RDNG 6553: Adolescent Literacy
Duration: 7 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
Course analyzes current federal initiatives and reform policies related to adolescent literacy. Examines the social and cognitive processes related to adolescent literacy. The course features study of methods to facilitate literacy learning for adolescents in all curricular areas.
