The master’s level credentials developed in this 12 credit hour program can be applied toward an MSE in Educational Theory and Practice – Adult Education. This certificate also includes an option for those without a teaching certificate. Students in this program will benefit from the incorporation of technology that aligns with national expectations for the 21st-century educator.

Admissions

Here’s what you need to get started


A-State Online offers a streamlined admission process for both new students and transfers. Students who are interested in the Graduate Certificate in Adult Education online program must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution. A teaching certificate is not required. Make sure to review full admission requirements below.

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with at least 2.75 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale
    • Note: If you have a 2.75-2.99 GPA, you must make a grade of B or better during the first 12 hours of graduate work at Arkansas State University.
  • Complete online application
  • Pay the nonrefundable $30 fee
  • Send official transcript(s) from the college/university attended. Official transcripts are sealed transcripts sent from the sending institution.

Unless otherwise noted, Arkansas State University has not confirmed if a program has met requirements for an out-of-state licensure. Please refer to the Program Approval Map to determine which programs are eligible to be offered in states and to find relevant state agency contact information. Eligibility to offer in a state does not guarantee the program will meet state licensure/certification requirements.

Please contact your state’s Professional License Department/Board to ensure that your chosen distance education program meets your state’s requirements in which you intend to practice.

  • Students who fall below the minimum admission requirements (GPA) may send a written letter of appeal, GRE or GMAT scores (may be unofficial), and additional supporting information to [email protected].
  • The appeal request will be forwarded to the department chair for conditional admission review.

Get an overview of the topics you will study


Students who have a valid teaching license are required to complete 12 hours of coursework. Students who do not have a valid teaching license are required to complete 18 hours of coursework.

ELAE 5513: Introduction to Adult Education

Duration: 7 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

An in-depth study of the growth and development of adult education in the United States. Analysis of contemporary issues and trends in adult education is included.

ELAE 5533: Methods and Materials for the Adult Learner

Duration: 7 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

This course explores theory and application of methods and materials essential to effective instruction in adult education. Emphasis is on writing objectives, classifying content, classroom management, and utilizing media.

ELAE 5553: Practicum in Adult Education

Duration: 7 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

This course features a series of educational experiences designed to place students in a cooperative relationship with an experienced adult educator while under university supervision. Emphasis is placed on practice teaching and related on-the-job learning.

ELAE 6543: Administrative and Supervision of Adult Education

Duration: 7 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

This course features a study of the problems and procedures involved in the supervision and administration of vocational education. Study is considered from the national, state, and local levels.

Those who do not have a teaching license/certificate must also take the following:

ELAE 5523: Psychology of the Adult Learner

Duration: 7 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

This course is a study of the adult with emphasis on (1) learning theories and developmental processes; (2) major contributors to the adult learning discipline; and (3) psychological aspects of middle and later life challenges and crises.

ELAE 5543: Teaching Reading to Adults

Duration: 7 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

This course examines problems in teaching reading to adults. Special emphasis is on individual differences, materials of instruction, and measuring reading ability.
