B2C e-commerce runs on a different model entirely. Pricing is fixed and public, and payment happens immediately at checkout. Service standards must remain consistent across every customer rather than getting negotiated account by account. That difference is why B2C supply chains lean so heavily on self-service technology. Running both models means running two different fulfillment operations under one roof. Wholesale orders move in bulk, on a predictable calendar, to a small set of known destinations. Direct-to-consumer orders arrive continuously, in single units, to addresses that change with every sale.

This has real consequences for how a company structures its supply chain. A business selling through both channels often needs two distinct fulfillment workflows running in parallel. One is optimized for pallet-level wholesale shipments to a small number of business partners. The other is optimized for piece-level direct-to-consumer orders shipped to individual addresses. Companies that run both models through a single warehouse process, without adapting for these differences, run into trouble. They typically see slower picking times and higher fulfillment costs on their direct-to-consumer orders.
