Why did you start teaching?
My career as an educator began when I had the opportunity to teach clinical for an instructor that went to a conference. I loved it from day one, and I knew that I wanted to continue to influence future nurses to be the best they could be and to do the best they could do for their patients.
What's the best advice that you ever received?
The best advice I ever received was from my grandpa. He wasn't trying to give me advice, but when he was sick prior to passing away, he used to say, "I just want a cheese coney." He taught me that sometimes, you just have to have a cheese coney. In other words, there are times in illness when a patient is sick no matter how closely they are following the rules, and they just have to allow themselves to indulge in order to muster the mental strength to keep pushing through.
What's the best advice that you could give your students?
Don't be afraid of admitting you made a mistake, be afraid of not learning from your mistakes. Don't be afraid of not knowing the answer, be afraid of not taking the initiative to discover it for yourself.
What is the one book you think everyone should read?
"The Help" by Kathryn Stockett. This book reminds me that in every aspect of life it is imperative to know what others are going through if we are ever going to understand where they are coming from and where they want to end up.
What qualities make someone particularly successful in the area in nursing?
Compassion, empathy, motivation and initiative.
What do you think is the biggest challenge that nurses face today?
Learning to utilize (at times limited) resources to provide the best possible care for the most possible people.
Tell us something your students may not know about you.
I feel that no child should ever have to spend the night in a place where they don't feel secure. If I had unlimited funds, I'd build a massive house and adopt as many children as my husband would let me.
