Why did you start teaching?
I loved school and kept going—ending up with a doctoral degree in Family and Child Development. At that point, university teaching seemed the best option—and it has been an excellent journey!
What's the best advice that you ever received?
Be wary of giving advice to others.
What's the best advice that you could give your students?
Everyone has a different perspective and views the world from a context different than your own.
What is the one book you think everyone should read?
"Zoom" by Istvan Banyai—everything is about perspective and context.
What do you think is the biggest challenge that people in the profession face today?
In early childhood education, there are many challenges. Perhaps one which touches all the challenges is that ours is an emerging profession. The role of early childhood education as both infrastructure for the economy and the foundation of public education, who is included in the profession, who will serve as "gatekeepers" (all true professions have gatekeepers), compensation — each of these are issues bound up in the emerging profession.
Tell us something your students may not know about you:
My "in-the-field" experiences are primarily with children under the age of five. I've served as a lead teacher in a combined infant-toddler room, worked in faith-based and community child care, for three- and four-year-olds, and worked in a program for children with significant developmental delays.
