Why did you start teaching?
I believe teaching is a calling. I felt led to teach. I am more comfortable when teaching than any other thing I do.
What’s the best advice that you ever received?
It is okay to take time to think before making a decision. Not all decisions school leaders make have to be immediate. The best decisions are seasoned with think time.
What’s the best advice that you could give to your students?
Respond to things, don’t react. Make good, ethical decisions not based upon emotion but upon the greatest good.
What is the one book you think everyone should read?
The Bible. After that, maybe the Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I have been a fan since first grade.
What qualities make someone particularly successful in the area in which they teach?
Integrity, genuineness and compassion make a great teacher.
What do you think is the biggest challenge that people in the profession face today?
Media might be the biggest challenge for educators today. The political world seems to want to turn as many people against public education as possible. I still believe that the majority of teachers do a great job. The few who don’t get publicity and people tend to overgeneralize.
