Undergraduate Admission Guidelines

  • When completing the online application, choose the appropriate application type – A-State Online Freshman (if you have never attended college) or A-State Online Transfer (if you have previously attended any college).
  • Pay $30.00 non-refundable application fee
  • Submit an official High School Transcript with at least a 2.75 GPA or GED score of 500 (if taken prior to 2002) or 525 (if taken in or since 2002). The High School/GED requirement is waived for students who have previously successfully completed 13 or more transferrable college credit hours.
  • Submit official Test Scores (e.g., ACT, SAT, ASSET, COMPASS). Test scores are considered official if they are delivered directly to us from a testing center or from your high school on your official transcript. Test scores are valid for a period of five years from the date of the exam. The test score requirement is waived for students who have previously successfully completed 24 or more transferrable college credit hours.
    • ACT test scores of 21 or greater on the composite score as well as 19 on the Math, Reading, and English sub-scores
    • SAT test score of 990
    • Comparable scores from other exams may be used. Students must score at or above the scores listed in the tables below:

  • Cumulative college GPA of at least 2.0 on previous college coursework.
  • No remediation courses are available for this program. If a student does not show test scores that clear the need for remediation, they must show completion of or readiness for the following program courses:
    • English requirement: Students may be considered eligible for admission based on completion of English Composition I, English Composition II, or Writing Fundamentals with a grade of C or better.
    • Math requirement: Students may be considered eligible for admission based on completion of College Algebra or Intermediate Algebra with a grade of D or better.
  • No conditional admission status is available for this program.
  • International students must submit an attested or notarized copy of their high school diploma in English. Students seeking to transfer from a non-U.S. university or college must submit official transcripts from these institutions. A transcript evaluation by an independent agency (e.g., World Education Service or Education Credential Evaluators) will be required and will be the responsibility of the student. Proof of English proficiency may be required.

Additional Bachelor of General Studies Requirement:

Must have an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree.

Transfers

Students that have attended any other institution of higher education must meet the following requirements.

When the student has:

  • Less than 12 college hours: submit official final high school transcript and official test scores.
  • 13 - 23 college hours: have a minimum of 2.0 grade point average on cumulative transcripts and official test scores.
  • 24 or more college hours: have a minimum of 2.0 grade point average on cumulative transcripts.

Test scores are valid for five years from date of exam.

RN to BSN

  • Complete online application and submit application fee.

  • Cumulative GPA of 2.50 or above. If a student has a 2.40 – 2.499 the GPA may be calculated on nursing courses only. If the GPA on the nursing courses is 3.0 or above, the student is eligible for admission into the RN-to-BSN program. Students who do not have the required GPA and who lack pre-requisite courses are encouraged to take the pre-requisite courses and use those courses to bring up their GPA.

Transfers

Students that have attended any other institution of higher education must meet the following requirements.

When the student has:

  • Less than 12 college hours: submit official final high school transcript and official test scores.

  • 24 or more college hours: have a minimum of 2.0 grade point average on cumulative transcripts.

CPR Certification

Students entering the Nursing Programs are required to have completed a Health Care Provider Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation course (i.e., adult, infant, and child with AED). This course may be obtained at the local Red Cross, American Heart Association, or an approved facility. A card or letter demonstrating completion of the course must be presented. Annual proof of continued certification for the entire academic year is required. It is the students' responsibility to maintain current CPR certification.

Work Experience Requirements:

  • Must have completed 1000 hours of work as a RN prior to enrolling in NRSP 4793 RN-BSN Capstone. Applicants should contact Brinda McKinney, RN to BSN Advisor at bmckinney@astate.edu with any questions. Documentation of Work Experience form (.pdf)
  • On admission and throughout the RN-BSN program, the registered nurse must maintain an unencumbered nursing license, CPR certification, and an acceptable immunization status.
  • Proof of liability insurance (Must be individual policy bearing student's name; minimum: $1,000,000/$6,000,000 coverage) will be obtained as a course assignment and is to remain in effect through the capstone course.
  • All documentation required by the School of Nursing must be kept current at all times during the course of the program and may be authenticated at any time during the program.
  • A-State will accept diploma nurses.

Conditional Admission Requirements (Education only)

College of Education

Applicants to the master's programs who do not qualify for unconditional admission may qualify for conditional admission.

Conditional Admission Requirements

  • Complete online application and submit a nonrefundable $30 fee.
  • Official transcript(s) sent from the registrar of the college/university attended. Official transcripts are sealed transcripts sent from the sending institution.
  • A valid teaching certificate and other documents depending on the program.
  • No record as a felon or sex offender
  • Meet one of the following academic requirements:
    1. Have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution with a cumulative undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale, or
    2. Have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution with a minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 2.50 on a 4.0 scale and 3.0 GPA on the last 60 hours (admission with this GPA is contingent on a letter of recommendation from the school superintendent or principal), or
    3. Have at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) from a graduate school and a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.50 on a 4.0 scale from an accredited university.
  • Conditional admission requires that the candidate make a grade of B or better during the first twelve hours of graduate work at Arkansas State University.

Transfer Credits

Up to nine graduate hours from A-State-Jonesboro or other higher education institutions may be credited toward a program. No course can be older than six years by graduation time. Transfer credit will be evaluated by the Director of the Program. To request prior credit be evaluated, please complete the Graduate Transfer Credit Evaluation Form.

Master of Science in Education in Special Educational Instructional Specialist K-12

  • A written commitment from a building level administrator who will function as your mentor during the degree program. Applicants should review the qualifications and responsibilities with their chosen mentor prior to having the mentor complete the Mentor Form.

Master of Science in Education in Gifted, Talented, and Creative

  • A written commitment from a building level administrator who will function as your mentor during the degree program. Applicants should review the qualifications and responsibilities with their chosen mentor prior to having the mentor complete the Mentor Form.

Master of Public Administration

To be considered for admission to the MPA program, in addition to meeting Graduate School admission requirements:

  • Applicants must provide three letters of recommendation.
  • Applicants must submit a 2-3 page Statement of Purpose explaining why he/she has chosen to pursue a MPA degree.
  • An applicant's undergraduate background must include courses with grades of "C" or higher in American national government and principles of economics or their equivalents. If the student is deficient, these courses must be taken in addition to the graduate course requirements. Such undergraduate deficiencies must be completed prior to or during the first graduate enrollment period.

Master of Science in Sport Administration

Applicants are required to submit the following:

  • All official transcripts as verification of coursework and degree(s).
  • A formal Statement of Goals which should explain in at least 500 words why he/she wants to be admitted into the program and what he/she plans to do with the degree.
  • A current resume.
  • Two letters of recommendation from individuals who can speak to the applicant's academic potential and professional capabilities. One should be from a university faculty member who is familiar with the applicant's work as a student. One should come from a supervisor in which he/she has evaluated the applicant's current or prior work.

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required of all foreign students from countries in which English is not the native language. Students holding a baccalaureate or advanced degree from an accredited institution in the U.S. are exempt from this requirement.

Lastly, faculty may require interviews in addition to written credentials as part of the admission process. In addition to these requirements, admission to the degree program may require completion of specific prerequisite undergraduate courses.

Applicants will be considered for admission during a given review cycle only if all of the above materials have been received by the Graduate School's application deadlines. After the initial review of admission materials the committee members can either choose to reject the candidate without an interview or decide to proceed with an interview. Following the interview phase, the Admissions Committee makes its final recommendation to accept the candidate for admission or to deny admission. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Master of Engineering Management

  • Complete online application for A-State's MEM and submit a nonrefundable $30 fee.
  • Official transcript(s) sent from the registrar of the college/university attended. Official transcripts are sealed transcripts sent from the sending institution.
  • Have a baccalaureate degree or a master's degree with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale from an accredited institution.
  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited university OR a bachelor's degree that includes 18 hours in undergraduate Engineering from a regional accredited university.

Ed.S. Education Specialist Degree Superintendent

To be considered for the Ed.S. Education Specialist Degree program, each candidate must have, in addition to the admission requirements of the Graduate School, the following:

  • At least a 3.25 GPA in a master's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Three years of experience as a certified teacher in an educational institution. Please submit Teaching Experience Verification Form.
  • One year of building-level administrative experience.
  • A written commitment from a practicing central office administrator who will serve as a mentor during this program. Applicants should review the qualifications and responsibilities with their chosen mentor prior to having the mentor complete the Mentor Form.
  • Candidates for the Specialist degree are required to complete a minimum of 30 semester hours of graduate work. A maximum of nine semester hours of graduate credit may be transferred from other approved institutions.

Ed.S. Education Degree Specialist in Principalship

To be considered for the Specialist Degree-Principalship Track, each candidate must have, in addition to the admission requirements of the Graduate School, the following:

  • At least a 3.25 GPA in a master's degree from an accredited institution and program.
  • Two years of experience as a certified teacher in an educational institution. Please submit Teaching Experience Verification Form.
  • A current state-issued teaching license.
  • A written commitment from a practicing building-level administrator who will serve as a mentor during this program. Applicants should review the qualifications and responsibilities with their chosen mentor prior to having the mentor complete the Mentor Form .

Ed.S. Education Degree Specialist in Special Education

To be considered for the Specialist Degree-Director of Special Education Track, each candidate must have, in addition to the admission requirements of the Graduate School, the following:

  • At least a 3.25 GPA in a master's degree from an accredited institution and program.
  • Two years of experience as a special education teacher in an educational institution. Please submit Teaching Experience Verification Form.
  • A current state-issued special educator's teaching license.
  • A written commitment from a practicing special education director or central office administrator who will serve as a mentor during this program. Applicants should review the qualifications and responsibilities with their chosen mentor prior to having the mentor complete the Mentor Form .

Ed.S. Education Degree Specialist in Curriculum Instruction

To be considered for the Specialist Degree-Curriculum Director Track, each candidate must have, in addition to the admission requirements of the Graduate School, the following:

  • At least a 3.25 GPA in a master's degree from an accredited institution and program.
  • Two years of experience as a certified teacher in an educational institution. Please submit Teaching Experience Verification Form
  • A current state-issued teaching license.
  • A written commitment from a practicing building-level administrator who will serve as a mentor during this program. Applicants should review the qualifications and responsibilities with their chosen mentor prior to having the mentor complete the Mentor Form.

Ed.S. Education Degree Specialist in Gifted and Talented Director

To be considered for the Specialist Degree-Gifted and Talented Director Track, each candidate must have, in addition to the admission requirements of the Graduate School, the following:

  • At least a 3.25 GPA in a master's degree from an accredited institution and program.
  • Two years of experience as a certified teacher of gifted, talented, and creative (GTC) in an educational institution. Please submit Teaching Experience Verification Form
  • A current state-issued (GTC) teaching license.
  • A written commitment from a GTC director or district level administrator who will serve as a mentor during this program. Applicants should review the qualifications and responsibilities with their chosen mentor prior to having the mentor complete the Mentor Form.

Certificates

Certificates leading to licensure are available in the following areas: Building-Level Administrator, Special Education Director, Gifted and Talented Director, Curriculum Director, Special Education K-12, and Gifted, Talented and Creative Teachers.

  • An education-related master's degree from an accredited institution is a prerequisite for admission to all certificate programs except Special Education K-12 and Gifted, Talented and Creative Teachers, which require the possession of an initial teaching license.
  • Two years of teaching experience (except for Special Education K-12). Please submit Teaching Experience Verification Form
  • A written commitment from an educator who will function as your mentor during the degree program. Applicants should review the qualifications and responsibilities with their chosen mentor prior to having the mentor complete the Mentor Form.
